Read the synopsis of the Spanish American War 
A Splendid Little War (page1 and 2)

1)  "The United States Army was not prepared for war." Why not?

2)  Go to the World Map link and find the Phillipines.  Locate them on the  World Map handout.

3)  On the next page look at the link for the map of the Caribbean and locate Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba.  Mark on the map.

4)  "Despite the plan to prepare the Philippines for independence, however, Americans continued to rule the islands until after World War II."  I see some similarities between the war for the Philippines and the war in Iraq today.  Do you?  Why or why not?
