Running Start

High school juniors and seniors who show readiness for college-level classes have the opportunity to attend a community college and earn high school and college credit at the same time. The first step for the student to participate in Running Start is to take a placement examination at a community college and qualify for college level courses. Students can attend the high school Running Start workshop in the Spring or see a Cedarcrest counselor for details. After you have taken and passed the placement examination, the student must consult with their high school counselor to determine what college courses will fulfill high school graduation requirements. A form must be completed showing that the student has conferred with their high school counselor and determined what classes will be taken. The college will schedule a registration time for the student prior to the start of class at the community college. some things that the student must remember when they decide that they wish to participate in this program are:

Students must provide their own transportation to the community college.

1. If a student drops a college class they must officially drop the class through the community college

2. Students must remember that they will be enrolled in regular college classes with adult students where attendance may not be taken and the students are responsible for their own actions and participation.

3. The Riverview School District will pay for the students tuition in the Running Start Program. The student must pay for their books, lab fees, and other additional expenses.

4. Colleges and high schools operate on different schedules. The student will need to check each school’s calendar for term and/or semester starting dates, ending dates, and vacation dates.

5. A five (5) credit college course is equal to 1.0 high school credit.

Students & Parents must sign a Running start agreement form. For further information on this program, please talk to your counselor.
