Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, 11/19 (last names A-K) and Tuesday, 11/24 (last names L-Z) from 4:00 - 7:00p.m. each day in the gymnasium.  In our hopes to reduce long lines, we are asking parents to follow the schedule.  However, if it is truly necessary to switch days, teachers will be prepared to accommodate you.

We are asking teachers to limit each individual conference to not more than two minutes.  Extended individual conferences can be scheduled for a later day and time should it be necessary. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.  Your student's schedule will be available at the conference; however, to expedite the process, you may want to find out from your student who his/her teachers are and prioritize your meetings.  For parents who are not familiar with the conference format, teachers will be  seated alphabetically at tables along the perimeter of the gymnasium.  If there is a long line for a particular staff member, you  may want to move to another one of your student's teachers who has a shorter line.  However, if you are only interested in knowing what your child's grades are and prefer not to attend the conferences, you are able to access your child's grades online through the Parent Access Program.  If you do not know your password, or if you need assistance on this, please contact Mr. Perry Garrison at (425) 844-4846.

Parent Awareness/Prevention Event

Date:  November 3rd, 2009 at 7p.m.
CHS Auditorium

Speakers:  Nigel Wrangham, Certified Drug/Alcohol Counselor and the Duvall/Carnation Police Dept.

The Cedarcrest PTSA is proud to present our 2nd Annual Parent Awareness/Prevention Event, which will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Cedarcrest auditorium.

The Keynote Speaker, Mr. Nigel Wrangham, is an outstanding presenter who travels around the country speaking to the dangerous behaviors and the damage drugs and alcohol cause. He will talk with our students during the day at an assembly, and have an even more in-depth conversation with parents and community members during the evening event. He will share not only details of the brain and the risks involved with drug/alcohol use, but also of preventative measures which can be used to create healthier choices and behaviors for our children.

A Police Officer from the Duvall/Carnation Police Department will also be speaking at the evening event, explaining the "substances of choice" for many of our local youths, sharing pictures and details with parents of drug paraphernalia and the warning signs of using.

hivaidsHIV/AIDS Education

The AIDS Omnibus Bill, enacted by the legislature, requires that all AIDS curriculum materials used in the district be state approved.  School districts must also provide AIDS education "to all students grades five through twelve once during each school year."  Riverview School District is using the state approved KNOW AIDS and F.L.A.S.H. programs, developed by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and a team of school district, university and Department of Social and Health Services personnel.

Included in this legislation is the provision that all districts must provide an opportunity for parents to preview the curriculum prior to the instruction of students.  If you would like to preview the curriculum or have questions about what information students are given regarding HIV and AIDS, please contact Mrs. Peggy Filer via email at: filerp@riverview.wednet.edu or by phone at 425-844-4848.  Mrs. Filer will set up a time for you to preview all materials.

He will also speak on a parent's ability to learn to adjust easily to unexpected change. The Riverview Special-ed Families Network is a parent initiative to develop a forum for parents of school aged children with disabilities to support one another and to learn together. The Riverview School District is supportive of parent efforts for connecting families of children with disabilities; however, the Riverview School District is not organizing these activities.

decaDECA News

It was a busy month for DECA members as we celebrated DECA month in October.  This month was filled with membership, fundraising, community service, and leadership activities.  Highlights of the month include:

Adrienne Sychtysz was named our DECA Member of the Month for her active participation in our chapter and excellent work in our fundraising efforts.

Members sold Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough and other sundries through MRZ Red Apple Morley.  Students rose over $2000 for their efforts.  Products will be delivered in November.

Members worked in conjunction with Safeway to bring a digital mammography van to Duvall for breast cancer screening as part of our continuing joint effort during October.  Over twenty five local residents took advantage of the screening day.  Because of the number of participants there will be a mobile mammography visiting Duvall every month.

Our Vice President, Tyler Nesbit, met with members of the Cedarcrest High School CTE Advisory Committee and explained the role of DECA and Career and Technical Education.

As part of our membership drive, members participated in a laser tag event held at the high school.  Service was provided by Adrenaline Laser Sports of Duvall and the company continues to be an avid supporter of CHS DECA.

Community service was also done this month as members assisted at Camp Korey during their festival.  Members provided support to the camp in its fundraising efforts in order to provide services to their clientele.

Members filled out DECA cards of thanks to the staff of the school district to let them know that what is done everyday for students is appreciated.

Two members of our chapter, Tyler Nesbitt and Kendra Russell, flew down to the Disney studios in Burbank, California to present to members of the Disney Corporation management team as part of the ConnectedEDU program at Cedarcrest.  It was a great experience.

Finally, members attended the Fall Leadership Conference in Bellevue.  Here they studied aspects of leadership, professionalism in the world of business and how to prepare for a bright future.  This three day event was quite impactful for the attendees.

Students can still join DECA and are welcome to attend our meetings on the first and third Tuesdays each month.  If you cannot make a meeting go to our website linked to the CHS homepage or contact Mr. Hillestad in Portable 2 at the high school.

A Note from the Director:band
This fall has been an exciting whirlwind of events.  Schedules, weather, and a quick start to the year have challenged us this fall.  The bands and choirs at CHS consistently set high goals and standards, and move past their challenges because they love music!  This year marks a turning point for the CHS Music Department.  New uniforms, competitive marching, and strong musicians have set an energized tone for the year.  As other school districts are cutting arts from their schedule, Riverview continues to value the arts through scheduling, teamwork, and financial support.  The efforts of students and parents are immeasurable.  Their energy and dedication cannot be equated to dollars or cents. . .but by love and passion.  I commend every music student for their dedication to excellence; I am proud of the music students and feel very fortunate to work with each one!

Fall Concert Wows Audience!
On October 22nd, family and friends gathered in the CHS auditorium for our first concert of the year.  The Jazz Choir, Concert Choir, and Chamber Choir performed for the first half of the concert, showing depth for the early time of the school year.  Next, a brief intermission, followed by the Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble.  The audience was alternately amazed, awed, and finally, brought to their feet by the Wind Ensemble's performance of music from Cirque De Soleil's Quidam.  The endless hours of practicing, both during school, and every Tuesday and Thursday evening were demonstrated in a stellar performance. This very same piece will be performed at the upcoming marching competition in Auburn, and many parents were heard to say, "If you play like that in Auburn, you'll win!"

Auburn Veteran's Field Show Competition, November 7th!
CHS Marching Band and Color Guard will participate in Auburn Senior High School's 23rd annual Veterans' Day Marching Band Competition.  This event features 30 of the finest high school marching bands in the Pacific Northwest.

Upcoming fundraisers and other RHYTHM news:
Get your ovens ready - our famous Otis Spunkemeyer Cookie Dough fund raiser has begun! Sales will run through November 11th. Cookie dough will be delivered in mid-December in time for holiday baking.  If you're interested, see any band or choir student.

RHYTHM will also host a bake sale at the Carnation Tree Farm sometime during the tree season.

RHYTHM provided babysitting services for Cascade Community Theater's Halloween weekend production of "Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe".  We also provided goodies during intermission for the CHS Music Department fall concert.
Keep up with all RHYTHM activities on our website www.rhythmmusicboosters.org   We're also on Facebook.  Become a fan of RHYTHM!
