The 1998 varsity team started the season with a trip to Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, where they beat Buckeye High School, but lost a close game to the eventual Arizona State 4-A fourth place team, Catalina Foothills High School. With many new players this year, the team struggled early in the new 3-A Kingco League. The season ended with a strong 4-game finish, beating Issaquah (3-1) and Skyline (16-0) before losing a close, but well-played game to Newport (3-0)—then beating Mt. Si in the last game of the year (7-5).

This last game with Mt. Si was unique. In the top of the 7th a Cedarcrest player was coming in to score on a bunt. He did not expect that there would be a play at the plate and did not slide. When the throw came in there was slight contact with the catcher, and, by WIAA baseball rule, if you don’t slide on a tag play at home you are automatically ejected from the game. As we went to the bottom of the 7th with 7-3 lead we had no eligible players left to substitute and had to get the final three Mt. Si outs with only 8 players in the field--a complete infield and two outfielders. The position we lost was our catcher and we had no regular catchers available—so Joe LeMoine was moved from pitcher to become the new catcher (before high school he had done some catching.) Mt. Si did score 2 runs, but Cedarcrest was able to hold on to the win. The final three outs were made by Dan Frost (who caught a hard hit line drive at 3rd base), Marc Medley (who caught a fly ball in right field), and first baseman Joel Sanborn (who made the game-ending play when he fielded a ground ball and threw to the pitcher, Brent Robertson, covering 1st) base.)
