History

When it comes to Halloween have you ever asked the following questions?

1. Where and when did it begin?

2. Why did it start?

3. What historical concept does children dressing up as monsters and going door to door for candy have to do with Halloween?

Well, you've come to the right place. I will not only answer these questions, but I will cover a few more topics that I didn't mention above.

Halloween is the oldest holiday on Earth, dated back to the Pagan times. Unfortunately,  most of its history wasn't written down for centuries, leaving gaps between bits and pieces of the history known. Halloween originated in the British Isles as a Pagan Celtic celebration of Samhain way back in 5 B.C. Spirits rose from the dead and mingled with the living. Celts left food at their front doors to encourage good spirits and wore masks to scare off bad spirits.

Many centuries later, the Roman Catholic church attempted to get rid of all Pagan holidays (such as Halloween and Christmas). This attempt not only failed, but All Saints Day continued to grow and change. Then In 1840 a massive Irish migration to the United States brought Halloween to America. This act caused Halloween to grow and change even more.

Halloween comes from All Hallow's Evening. The slang for that was was "All Hallow's Even", the eve of All Hallow's Day which was Old English for "holy person". Later "All Hallow's Even" was shortened to  "Hallowe'en", and eventually changed to "Halloween", which is our current title for this holiday.
