The Civil War The Civil War was a war between the Northern and the Southern part of America during 1861-1865. The conflict for the war was slavery. The North was against slavery and wanted to abolish it everywhere they could, but the South on the other hand liked having slaves around and wanted this horrid tradition to continue. The present time president was Abraham Lincoln and he too wanted the slavery to stop as well. But there was nothing they could do but fight. The North was known as the Union army and the South was known as the Confederate Army. And they fought for four long years until finally on April 17th, 1865 while on a trip to Richmond, Abraham Lincoln and Fellow Union Army commander Lee and his men blind sighted and surrounded the Confederates' army five times around and forced the very hungry and tired confederate army to surrender. Five times around meaning the Union army had 5 times the amount of men than the confederate army. Ending The Great Civil war. Major battles of the war include: Ft. Sumter Fredericksburg Gettysburg Siege of Petersburg Battle of Nashville
