The South wanted to be their own country they were known as Confederates or Rebels so they could allow slaves, but the North would not allow slavery they were known as the Yankees. the war ended when General Lee surrendered, he was a southerner leader. Shortly after the war a confederate John Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln at a theater. as part of a conspiracy.
