| Return to Home Page The Civil War From 1861-1865, the North and South of the United States were locked in a battle for rights and equality, in a conflict as to whether or not slavery should be abolished from the country. Economic and social differences between the North and South, fights between slave and non-slave proponents, growth of the abolition movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln, were all factors that contributed to the start of the war. Many people hated President Lincoln at the time, believing that he came into office already with the idea that slavery should be eliminated forever, giving the North an unfair advantage in the war. Even so, on December 16, 1864, 55,000 Federal troops faced 20,000 Confederates in a head-to-head battle, and the Confederate army ceased to exist...along with slavery!
