THE CIVIL WAR The Civil War started in 1861. Abraham Lincoln was the president during the war. The only people who helped the Americans were the African American slaves. The Northerners just no point in having slaves so they wanted to free them. The Southerners didn't agree so they declared war. On April 7th, 1865, lines at Petersburg broke. General Lee surrendered! The Northerners won the war and the slaves were free! Major battles of the war:
