The war was fought between two major alliances. These alliances were the Axis Powers, who were led by Germany, and the Allies, led by the United Kingdom. The war began with the invasion of Poland by Germany, and of China by the empire of Japan. Over 60 million people were killed during this war. Adolf Hitler led the Germans, and he was the cause of the killings of over 6 million Jews. The climaxing event that ended the war was Hitler committing suicide, with his wife of whom he had been married to the day before.
