THE CIVIL WAR

The war was from 1861-1865. During this time the President was a man named Andrew Johnson. Other major role players in the war were John Adams who was a Brigadier General, Archibald Gracie jr. who was another Brigadier General, and William Joseph Hardee who was a lieutenant General. The reason that all these men had to go into the war was the southern economy was built on the labor of African American slaves because they were cheap labor. Also, Tariffs were taxes placed on imported goods, the money would then go to the government. southern people were against Tariffs while the West was for them. On April 7th, 1865, it was a joyous day for the army from the West. Lee had to surrender to Lincoln when his army (weak and hungry) was surrounded.

Major battles of the war include:

  • Battle of Pea Ridge

  • Battle of Atlanta

  • Battle of Nashville

  • Battle of Murfreesboro
