The Civil War

Between 1861 and 1865, the United States was torn in two and thrust into a battle that would later be known as the deadliest war in our nations' history. The cause of the Civil War was mainly because of  slavery, but states rights, unfair legislative representation, and high tariffs also contributed to the fallout. The Union (North) and Confederacy (South) finally found peace on April 9, 1865 when the Confederate capital fell at the Battle of Five Forks and General Lee surrendered his troops at Appomattox Court House. Some important people that contributed throughout the war were Abraham Lincoln (president of the Union), Jefferson Davis (president of the Confederacy), Robert E. Lee, and William Sherman.

Major battle of the war include:

  • Fort Sumter

  • Bull Run

  • Gettysburg

  • Vicksburg
