THE AMERICAN

REVOLUTION

From 1775 to 1783, America experienced their first war as a newly developed country. The known cause for the clash between America and Great Britain was the fact that America believed they were entitled to full democratic rights as Englishmen, while Britain viewed the Americans as simple colonies to be used and exploited in whatever way best suited Britain. The war officially ended in 1783 with the defeat of the British army in Yorktown, Virginia, leading up to the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Some important people that contributed throughout the war were George Washington (the commander in chief of the American army and future first president), John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Ben Franklin, and Sam Adams.

Major battles of the war include:

  • Lexington and Concord

  • Bunker Hill

  • Trenton

  • Saratoga
