World War II From the late 1930's to 1945, the entire world experienced a time of great loss in one of the most horrific events to ever overtake a series of several nations. The immediate cause for World War II was the invasions of Poland and China by Germany and the Empire of Japan. Although this was the immediate cause for war, it was certainly not the last. The countries fighting against each other were the Axis (Germany, Italy, Empire of Japan) and the Allies (United Kingdom, France, Soviet Union, United States). The war came to a close on April 29, 1945 when Germany surrendered, followed shortly by Japans' surrender on August 15 after atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some important people that contributed throughout the war were Franklin Delano Roosevelt (U.S. President), Harry Truman, Adolf Hitler (head of Nazi party), and Joseph Stalin.
