THE CIVIL WAR

The Civil War (1861-1865) was caused by several things. The most major cause of the war was the problem of slavery. The South wanted slavery while the North did not. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, and once he was elected for President, many of the southern states segregated from the North. Once the South had officially segregated, they elected their own President. Jefferson Davis was elected and was known as the Confederate President. The war started and many battles and problems occurred for both sides. The South had begun buying foreign goods. The North saw this and taxed foreign goods, forcing the South to buy goods from the North, and therefore help the enemy. Many people greatly involved in the war included Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought for the Union, and Robert E. Lee and John Bell Hood, who fought for the Confederate's. Several battles occurred during this war; but, the most famous of these was the battle known as Gettysburg. The major cause of the end of the Civil War was the Battle of Nashville where the Confederate Army was decimated. Our country now holds the scar of this war imbedded in graves. But because of these graves, our country has no slavery, and freedom now is in reach of all those in this country.

Major battles of the war include:

Georgia March

Battle of Bull Run (Manassas Junction)

Gettysburg (Virginia)

Battle of Nashville (Tennessee)
