1861 - 1865

  • Summary

The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865

What started the war was the southern part of America wanted independence from the northern part of America. The line that separated the two halves of the young nation was the Mason Dixon Line. Everything south of it, for example, Virginia, Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, etc.

Lincoln was president during this time.

Why the southern part of America wanted emancipation in the early 1800's is because the two halves of the young country were so incredibly different and had different views of the way the country should be run.

The Confederates were the South and the Union was the North of America.

The Confederate were mostly slave and plantation owners and had the most political pull on the government, especially Virginia.

The Union were tradesmen and military as well as politicians and inventers.

The surrender of General Lee of the Confederate was the final, death blow to the Confederate resistance. With the surrender of Lee came the surrender of the Confederate.

After the surrender of Lee, President Lincoln was assassinated and that concluded the war.
