Home THE CIVIL WAR The Civil War was a battle between the Northern and Southern states over the debate of slavery. Politicians had been debating releasing all slaves, as the slaves being held captive was going against the constitution. The Southern States clearly did not agree with the Northern States, so the Southern States decided to split away from the rest of the United States of America. This resulted in the beginning of a war, starting in 1860 and lasting until 1865, when the south gave in after many defeats. The end of the war came shortly after Lee's surrender, but then President Lincoln was assassinated. Major battles of the war include:
