THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The American Revolution was fought between the British and the Americans, fighting for their independence from Britain. At the time, there was no president. The British was denying Colonists their freedom from Britain, as well as placing high taxes on tea. The Americans retaliated by dumping thousands of pounds of tea off the British ships into the harbor. This rising conflict soon led to actual battles on the field. The war lasted until 1783, when the Americans surrounded the British in Yorktown, forcing their surrender. Major battles of the war include: Concord and Lexington
