Attendance and Absences:
[top]

Since a good deal of time is spent on teacher's lectures and students' practice, regular attendance is necessary.  Tardiness to class should be also avoided because arriving late disrupts the student learning and teaching process.  A student will be considered tardy only if he/she arrives to class within the first ten minutes of class time.  After ten minutes, the student will be considered absent.  Student's participation in the class activities cannot be made up and will affect his/her grade.  If a student is absent/tardy, he/she needs to provide to the teacher an acceptable written note or e-mail or call from the parents within 48 hours from the absence/tardy .  Any uncleared absences/tardies which exceed the 48-hour time limit will be determined as "Unexcused ."

During each 18-week period, students are allowed only 10 excused or unexcused absences. School related absences (field trips, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, etc.) are not counted toward the 10-day absence rule.  Students who accumulate more than 10 absences within an 18 week semester will not receive credit for any classes in which they exceed 10 absences.  Absences can not be made up; however, work may be made up for excused absences.  It is the student's responsibility to arrange for make-up work with their teachers . Students who are more than 10 minutes tardy to class are considered absent.

Students who lose credit due to excessive absences may request a hearing with the building attendance appeal committee which will review any documented evidence which supports the students appeal for credit and rule on whether credit will be allowed.  If credit is not allowed at the end of the term the grade for affected classes will be recorded as an "F" on the student's transcript.  If a student is still not satisfied following the in-building appeal he/she may appeal the decision to the district hearing officer.

Tardiness:
[top]

Students are expected to be in the classroom ready for class to begin when the tardy bell sounds.

Policy 1:   A student who has three (3) tardies will have their grade dropped one grade level i.e. A to A-, B+ to B, etc.  This will affect the grade in multiples of 3 tardies, therefore if a student has an A in the class and 6 tardies, their grade would be a B+, if a student has an A and 9 tardies their grade would be a B.  If necessary, grades will be adjusted for tardies at mid-term and/or at end of the term.

Attend class every day and be on time!

Cheating and Plagiarism :
[top]

Cheating or plagiarism will result in a failing grade for any assignment, as will permitting another student to use one's own work for cheating or plagiarism.  The teacher's definition of cheating includes looking at, pretending to look at, or trying to look at someone else's paper or test, looking around the room, using or possessing with intent to use cheat notes, talking during quiz/test/exam, and so on.  The school policies on cheating will be followed.

Don't cheat yourself!

Resources:

In this course, the instructor is the main resource for students, and will provide a series of handouts.  Students' concentration, enthusiastic participation in class and persistent effort outside of the class will have a positive affect on their achievements.

Materials:
[top]

Every day each student is expected to come to class with the required materials such as paper, pen, pencil, eraser, three-ring binder, notebook, etc.  Failure to do so will result in lowering their participation grade.

Come prepared and ready to learn!

Hall Pass :
[top]

Each student will be given hallway passes to use at their discretion during the term.   Student is expected to present a pass and ask teacher's permission in Japanese each time he/she wants to use it.  Unused hallway passes will be student's extra points at the end of the term.

Use it wisely!

Grading:
[top]

20% ASSIGNMENTS

25% ORAL PRESENTATION/ PROJECTS

25% QUIZZES/TESTS

15% PARTICIPATION

15% FINAL

It is each student's responsibility to keep all the records of assignments, quizzes, tests, exams, etc.  Failure to put name on assignments and/or tests will result in a zero.

Assignments and Late Work Policy:

All assignments are to be turned in when due.   Homework is due at the beginning of the class.  Work for unexcused absences cannot be made up.  In the case of an excused absence, students will have the opportunity to make up all work within the time frame specified by the teacher.  It is the student's responsibility to find out what was missed.  This can be done by contacting classmates and /or the teacher outside of class time.

Be responsible!

Oral Presentation/Projects:

It is important to develop and improve speaking skills in the process of learning a foreign language.  Dialogue, skit, speech, presentation, etc. will be given for assessment.

Communicate with each other in Japanese in the classroom as well as outside!

Quizzes/Tests/Final:

Quizzes and tests must be taken as scheduled.  However, in case of emergency or illness, the student may make them up.  It is the student's responsibility to come to the teacher to arrange the make up time when he/she comes back from the absence. Make up quiz/test must be taken no later than one week after the absence.  If a student is absent the day(s) before a test but was informed of it beforehand, he/she will be expected to take the test on the day he/she returns.  If a student has been gone several days before a test, and was not previously notified of the test, upon his/her return he/she must immediately make arrangement with the teacher to take it.  Failure to do so will result in a zero.  Failure to take the final will result in an incomplete grade. Extra point(s) for quizzes/tests/exams are only offered on the scheduled date.  A student will miss the opportunity to earn the extra point(s) by being absent.

Take it on time!

Do your best!

Participation:
[top]

Participation grades will be recorded based on the teacher's observations of a student's overall classroom behavior.  Good attendance and positive contribution to the classroom instruction and its environment will be the basis for a student to receive his/her participation grade.   Good participation grades can be achieved by following classroom rules, being on time, paying attention, cooperating, using class time efficiently, demonstrating positive behavior and attitude, being prepared with materials, homework, and assignment.  Participation cannot be made up.

Following is a list of unacceptable behaviors that will lower the participation grade.  Of course, this list is not comprehensive and any negative behavior will result in a loss of points whether it is on the list or not: being unprepared, unmotivated, undisciplined, disruptive, rude, using inappropriate language, sleeping, doing other class assignments, not participating, speaking out of turn, making unnecessary noise, tapping, interrupting, making fun of others, encouraging other student's inappropriate behavior, whining, whistling, singing, making negative comments, talking back, touching teachers' property and class equipment without permission, etc.  Continued negative behavior will result in removal from class that period and a referral to the administration.

Follow the classroom rules!
